Hits & Misses: 2nd Group Phase

It’s that time of the week again! Our score in the 2nd group phase has been a considerable improvement over the previous week’s. With a tally of 102 points, our playing XI managed to get us a rank of 32,508 out of a total registered 980,000+ users for this particular round. So that’s like top 5%. Not bad eh? Anyhow, here is our take on the Good, Bad & Ugly for the 2nd group phase.

Julio Cesar: 9 Points
With a strong defensive display from both sides that saw the match end 0-0 (all credit due to an absolutely brilliant performance from the Mexican keeper Ochoa), our first choice keeper Julio Cesar got 9 points, owing to a clean sheet and a few saved shots.

Sergio Ramos: 8 Points
The Spanish faithful hoped that their first game was a one off calamity and that they would bounce back, but it was not to be, as La Furia Roja were sent home packing courtesy of a 2-0 drubbing at the hands of La Roja (ironic?). In spite of that, Ramos managed to get 8 points (HOW DOES HE DO THIS?), owing to his success in number of Recovered balls.

Jose Cholevas: 9 Points
A decent defensive display, saw Jose pick up 9 points for his efforts in keeping a clean sheet against Japan. Making up for his poor performance in the 1st group phase, Jose has found himself promoted to The Good section for this week. Well done!

Marcus Rojo: 13 Points
Our super budget friendly left back picked up a whopping 13 points from his match against Iran. He not only managed to keep a perfect clean sheet, but also chipped in with his share of Blocked shots, Balls recovered and Balls delivered into the penalty area. Don’t you just love it when the budget players pull off a massive tally? We sure do.

Pejman Montazeri: 8 Points
We promised we would give Pejman a spot in our starting XI for his performance in the first match. And he almost rewarded us with a clean sheet against La Albiceleste, if not for that sweet curling finish from the Messi-ah himself. Tough luck Iran! In spite of that he did manage a decent 8 points owing to his success in Balls recovered and Shots blocked.

Mathieu Valbuena: 11 Points
Valbuena had a cracker of a game in the 2nd group phase, picking up a goal and assist in the 5-2 thrashing of Switzerland, earning an impressive 11 points for us. With him pulling the strings in midfield, France look to be on their way to an easy journey through the group stages.

Ki Sungyueng: 10 Points
Our Korean pick has put in a consistent display over the first two group phases, picking up a decent 8 and 10 points in his first two games, although it hasn’t been of much help to his team unfortunately. Chipping in with an assist and a few Balls recovered and Balls delivered, Ki has picked up a decent tally of 10 points this round.

Ivan Rakitic: 8 Points
Similar to his last week’s game, Rakitic did not manage to pick up any goals or assists, but still managed to do just about okay. With a decent pass completion rate and some Recovered balls, Ivan managed to get 8 points for us. We did expect more out of him from the group stages though.

Granit Xhaka: 9 Points
Though they got absolutely hammered by Les Bleus, Switzerland did manage to pick up their game in the final 10 minutes and come up with 2 goals to show. One of them came from a Xhaka freekick, which luckily found itself going through the wall and in the back of the net as Benzema unwittingly jumped out of it’s way. Thanks Karim! We owe you one.

Robin Van Persie: 7 Points
The Flying Dutchman was on the scoresheet again for the Oranje, picking up a goal and making it 3 goals in 2 matches for the striker. Unfortunately he also picked up 2 yellows over the past two matches, which means he can’t play the last game of the group stages. Since Netherlands are through from their group, RVP’s absence won’t matter much to the team. But we surely will miss the MVP.

The Ugly

Romelu Lukaku: 3 Points
Disappointing! Again! Lukaku managed to get just one more point than his tally in the previous round (Yay?!), making him the only player this week who deserves to be in the Ugly section. We admit, this is one of the rare picks which we got completely wrong for the group stages. We will definitely think long and hard if the misfiring Belgian deserves to nail a spot in our round of 16 team if they qualify.
